South Pittsburg and Marion County both have players named as Tennessee Mr. Football semifinalists.
South Pittsburg’s junior running back Garrett Raulston was named to the Tennessee Secondary Sports Athletic Association’s Division I Class 1A list and Marion County’s senior running back Jacob Saylors made the Class 2A list.
A total of five semifinalists were named in the Division I Classes 1A to 6A and Division II Classes A to AAA. Each class will be narrowed down to three finalists on Nov. 13. The winners will be announced on Nov. 27.
South Pittsburg head coach Vic Grider said he was proud Raulston made the list.
“It is a great honor for him and a tribute to his teammates,” he said.
Grider also said Raulston will keep getting better.
“He is a great player who has not reached his full potential yet,” he said.
Marion County head coach Joey Mathis said he is “extremely excited” Saylors was nominated.
“Jacob is a tremendous athlete and football player obviously, but he is equally an impressive youth who has worked extremely hard since he stepped foot on campus at Marion County,” said Mathis. “Like the Marion County players before him that have either won or been nominated, he is a great representative of our program.”
According to a press release from the TSSAA, a committee of statewide sports writers will select the winners. High school head coaches and the media nominated the finalists.
This is the 33rd year the Mr. Football awards have been presented.
